All work and no play? No way

Salsa dancers, hikers and football fans – people applying to our internships, apprenticeships and graduate schemes often worry they’ll spend less time on their hobbies if they want to further their career.

That assumption couldn’t be further from the truth. We know that when people are happy outside the office, they’re happier inside it. And more importantly, we know that the skills people gain from their hobbies can help improve their work from day to day. That’s why we encourage our people to do the things they enjoy and use the skills they’ve learned, inside and outside work, like Catherine.


A passion for teamwork

Catherine is a Geography graduate working in the Customer Propositions team. She’s also the captain of a rugby team.


“I’ve discussed my working pattern with my manager to make sure I can get to all our games,” Catherine says. “Some weeks I work until the end of the day, whereas other weeks I change my working pattern to leave a little earlier.”

Captaining the team is teaching Catherine a lot. “Sport develops your perseverance and determination, as you’re constantly pushing yourself to achieve,” she says. “I’ve definitely transferred these skills to work. There are days when I need to persevere and get projects over the line within their timeframe.”
