Meet Tina: Apprentice after 34 years at LBG

Apprenticeships at Lloyd’s Banking Group are open to anyone, at any age. Find out what inspired Tina to start her apprenticeship journey and the exciting next step it’s led to.

I’d been working for Lloyd’s Banking Group for 34 years when I asked my Area Director if I could be considered for an apprenticeship. The last thing I expected to hear was “Yes!”, but that’s exactly what happened.

I left school at the age of 16 with GCSE qualifications but I didn’t know what I really wanted to do. So, I decided to join Lloyd’s Banking Group and see what happened. Fast forward to 2020 and I’d become Manager at the same bank I joined all those years ago. I loved the role – working alongside brilliant colleagues and supporting customers with their banking.

One day I received an email about opportunities to enrol on an apprenticeship. I took the time to reflect and research whether it was the right thing for me. I decided it was. With my line manager’s backing, I applied and was accepted on to the Level 5 Operations Manager Apprenticeship.

Two years on, I’ll soon be completing my end point assessment. I would be lying if I said the journey has been without challenges, but with the support of an engaged line manager – and a coach who provided more encouragement than I could ever ask for – I’ve enjoyed every minute of being an apprentice. From meeting challenging assessment deadlines, to learning how to do Harvard referencing in my written assignments, my knowledge and skills have grown enormously. But more importantly, I’ve learned so much about myself as an individual and what I want to achieve.

Because of this, I had the confidence to apply when I saw a Senior Bank Manager position become available. And I’m pleased to say my application was successful! Thanks to the apprenticeship, I was able to evidence how I’ve been putting the behaviours, knowledge, and skills I’ve learned into practice day to day.

So here I am, about to begin a new journey at Lloyds’ Banking Group. I know it will take time to settle into my new role and really make a difference. But I’m confident I’ll be successful. I’ll always be grateful for everything I’ve gained through the apprenticeship and how it will continue to support my journey.
